Young Lives Trust (YLT) promises to protect any personal data you share with us as a donor, fundraiser, volunteer, or by participating in our programs and services. This includes any data you share with us directly or through other organizations we work with. We aim to be transparent when we collect your data and ensure that we do nothing beyond what you would reasonably expect.
Understanding Our Supporters
Developing a better understanding of our supporters through their personal data allows us to make better decisions, fundraise more efficiently, and ultimately help us achieve our goal of supporting young lives.
Communication Policy
We use an ‘opt-in only’ communication policy. This means that we will only send fundraising and marketing communications to those who have explicitly stated that they are happy for us to do so via their preferred channel(s) (email, SMS, phone, or post).
Our fundraising and marketing communications include information about how we are helping to support young people. If you would like to receive such communications but have not opted in, please contact us via email at hello@younglivestrust.org.
Information Collected
We collect information in the following ways:
When You Give It to Us Directly
You may give us your information to sign up for one of our events, share your story, make a donation, participate in a program, or communicate with us. Sometimes, your information is collected by an organization working for us (e.g., a professional fundraising agency), but we are responsible for your data at all times.
When You Give It to Us Indirectly
Your information may be shared with us by independent event organizers or fundraising sites. These independent third parties will only do so when you have indicated that you wish to support Young Lives Trust and with your consent. You should check their privacy policy when you provide your information to understand how they will process your data.
When You Give Permission to Other Organizations to Share or It Is Available Publicly
We may combine information you provide with information available from external sources to gain a better understanding of our supporters and improve our fundraising methods, products, and services.
The information we get from other organizations may depend on your privacy settings or the responses you give, so you should regularly check them. This information comes from:
-
Third-Party Organizations
You may have provided permission for a company or other organization to share your data with third parties, including charities. This could be when you buy a product or service, register for an online competition, or sign up with a comparison site.
-
Social Media
Depending on your settings or the privacy policies for social media and messaging services, you might give us permission to access information from those accounts or services.
-
Information Available Publicly
This may include information found in places such as Companies House and information that has been published in articles or newspapers.
When We Collect It as You Use Our Websites or Apps
Like most websites, we use “cookies” to help us make our site better. Cookies mean that a website will remember you. They’re small text files that sites transfer to your computer (or phone or tablet). They make interacting with a website faster and easier.
Information We Collect and How We Use It
Supporters
If you support us, for example, by making a donation, volunteering, registering to fundraise, or signing up for an event, we will usually collect some of the following information:
Your contact details
Your date of birth
Your bank or credit card details
Where it is appropriate, we may also ask for:
Information relating to your health (for example, if you participate in a health-related program)
Why you have decided to support us. We will never make this question mandatory and only want to know the answer if you are comfortable telling us.
We will mainly use your data to:
Provide you with the services, products, or information you asked for
Administer your donation or support your fundraising
Keep a record of your relationship with us
Ensure we know how you prefer to be contacted
Understand how we can improve our services, products, or information
If you enter your details onto one of our online forms and don’t submit the form, we may contact you to see if we can help with any problems you may be experiencing with the form or our websites.
We may also use your personal information to detect and reduce fraud and credit risk.
Building Profiles of Supporters and Targeting Communications
We use profiling and screening techniques to ensure communications are relevant and timely, providing an improved experience for our supporters. Profiling also allows us to target our resources effectively, raising more funds sooner and more cost-effectively.
When building a profile, we may analyze geographic, demographic, and other information relating to you to better understand your interests and preferences. We may use additional information from third-party sources when it is available.
Direct Marketing
With your consent, we will contact you to let you know about our progress and ask for donations or other support. Occasionally, we may include information from partner organizations or organizations that support us in these communications. We make it easy for you to tell us how you want us to communicate, and we include information on how to opt out when we send you marketing.
We do not sell or share personal details to third parties for marketing purposes. However, if we run an event in partnership with another named organization, your details may need to be shared. We will be clear about what will happen to your data when you register.
Sharing Your Story
Some people choose to share their experiences with us to help further our work. This may include sharing sensitive information related to their health and family life in addition to their biographical and contact information.
If we have the explicit and informed consent of individuals, or their parent or guardian if they are under 18, this information may be made public at events, in materials promoting our work, or in documents such as our annual report.
Support for Individuals
We run services to provide support to individuals and collect personal data to provide those services. Our staff may collect sensitive personal data about your health when you communicate with them. They will use this information to assess whether our services are right for you. We will also use it for training, quality monitoring, or evaluating the services we provide.
Young Lives Trust will only share your details in exceptional circumstances to comply with legal requirements.
We may also collect and retain your information if you send feedback about our services or make a complaint.
Children’s Data
We collect and manage information from children and aim to manage it appropriately for the child’s age. Information is usually collected for sending out our services and programs for young people.
Keeping Your Data Safe and Who Has Access to It
We ensure that there are appropriate technical controls in place to protect your personal details. For example, our online forms are encrypted and our network is protected and routinely monitored.
We use external companies to collect or process personal data on our behalf. We do comprehensive checks on these companies before we work with them and put a contract in place that sets out our expectations and requirements.
We may need to disclose your details to the police, regulatory bodies, or legal advisors if required.
Keeping Your Data Up to Date
Where possible, we use publicly available sources to keep your records up to date. We appreciate it if you let us know if your contact details change.
Changes to This Policy
We may change this Privacy Policy from time to time. If we make any significant changes in how we treat your personal information, we will make this clear on the Young Lives Trust website or by contacting you directly.
If you have any questions, comments, or suggestions, please let us know by contacting us.
